SizeFixer Questions Answered

With any new product as innovative and potentially revolutionary as SizeFixer, you are certain to have many questions. We have noted below many of the common questions we have been asked, together with our replies. If there is an issue or query which is not covered here, please contact Technical Support and let us know the details or use the form provided on the Contact page.

  1. What does SizeFixer do?
  2. I've opened an image and the Super Resolution option is unavailable. Why?
  3. I know my images have EXIF data but the Super Resolution will still not activate. Why?
  4. I can't access the Preferences options. Why not?
  5. SizeFixer just stopped working and now I can't open any image file. Why?

What does SizeFixer do?

SizeFixer SLR enlarges images up to about A1 size (23"x33"). The actual limit is a function of the no of Pixels in the image and it has an absolute limit of 68 MPixels. SizeFixer XL has no upper limit and can in theory create an image as large as your computer will allow. But remember this is a very computationally intensive process and you may have to wait a while to create very large images.

I've opened an image and the Super Resolution option is unavailable. Why?

SizeFixer can upsize an image in two ways depending on the type of input image. The standard method uses an enhanced form of the processing used by many leading solutions and will work on any image whether from a digital camera, DVD frame, Mobile phone or scanned image so long as the file is in a recognised format. For Super Resolution to operate additional information is required to build the model of the Lens and Optics of the source camera. This information is usually found in the EXIF file created by the camera at the time the image was captured. If this data is available and valid then the Super Resolution feature will be activated and available for you to use. If you use a Digital Back it is possible to use an external EXIF editor to add back the details we need. Contact Technical Support for further information.

I know my images have EXIF data but the Super Resolution will still not activate. Why?

This is probably one of two reasons.

a) The source camera has incorrectly saved the parameters and SizeFixer can not validate the information provided. We know of a couple of leading cameras where the F Number details are completely incorrect and this fails the SizeFixer internal validation. The only work around we have at this time is to use an external EXIF editor to correct the information. A future upgrade will include an EXIF editor within the SizeFixer control panel.

b) The source image has been preprocessed or perhaps converted from RAW and this external programme has removed the EXIF information. Our only recommendation in this case is to avoid all image processing before using SizeFixer and in our experience Adobe Photoshop retains the EXIF data when converting from RAW.

I can't access the Preferences options. Why not?

The current version of SizeFixer does not have any user options that can be changed. However, the rules for the Mac User Interface require the Preferences menu option to be present but 'greyed out'.

SizeFixer just stopped working and now I can't open any image file. Why?

Occasionally the system files that SizeFixer uses to store image settings become corrupted. For example this can sometimes occur if the processing of an image becomes interrupted for some reason. To rectify you need to delete the corrupted files and these will then be recreated next time you select an image.

Typical Symptoms: File opens in preview but SizeFixer crashes before main image view opens, or when proessing an image.

Solution: There are three files that you will need to delete (there is no way to tell which of them is faulty):

outputsize_presets.xml
preferences.xml
parameter_presets.xml

Windows Instructions:

The files are stored in the Application Data folder that are specific to each Windows XP user. So if more than one User operates SizeFixer then you may need to delete the files for each user. The files can be found in the following Directory where <your username> should be replaced by the name of each relevant user:

C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\FixerLabs\SizeFixer SLR\

You can navigate to this directory from the "Start" menu and then select "My Computer" and then go to drive C: (usually). If you cannot see the "Application Data" folder you will need to make hidden files and folders visible. (Select the Tools menu option and then Folder Options, select the View tab and then set "Show hiden files and Folders" to be on). Not all three of the files may be present but delete any that are. You will unfortunately lose any output size and parameter settings that you have previously created.

Mac Instructions: coming soon
